law enforcement officials familiar with the case say they appear to have consisted of an explosive and shrapnel backed inside a pressure cooker, probably triggered by some kind of timer. if that is the case, we have seen this before. one of the three devices used in the 2010 attack in times square incorporated a pressure cooker containing approximately 120 fire crackers. a soldier, nazir abdul, convicted last year of plotting an attack at ft. hood, texas, was using a bomb-making recipe from an al qaeda-linked online magazine that used a pressure cooker. in july of 2006, more than 130 died in a series of attacks on the mumbai transit system with pressure cooker explosives placed on the trains. the department of homeland security has warned of the potential terrorist use of pressure cookers saying "as a common cooking utensil, the pressure cooker is often overlooked when searching vehicles, residences, or merchandise crossing the u.s. borders." now, of course, there's still much more that authorities want to know about this particular case. and for the very latest on the investigation, w

have you heard any words from fbi, law enforcement authorities on future briefings? >> well, there's going to be one in about two hours up in boston i think is the current plan. it wasn't clear if it was going to be 8:30 or 9:30 eastern. but now they're settling on 9:30. i guess you can watch what they say, but you can also watch what they do. the fact this happened in boston, that there was, you know, no obvious federal crime. but the fbi is leading the investigation says it all. because the fbi automatically has the lead in any attack that is considered to be terrorism. so that's -- that really tells you everything you need to know. >> all right. our thanks to chuck todd and pete williams. >> thanks, guys. >> we'll be getting updates throughout the morning. >>> up next, we'll hear from an e.r. doctor who treated some of the victims in yesterday's attack. >>> congressman michael mccullough will be joining us. "morning joe" will be right back from boston. everybody has different investment objectives, ideas, goals, appetite for risk. you can't say 'one size fits all'
